Their best known album is Slaughter of the Soul, released inside 1995. It is a share of the "New Wave of Swedish Death Metal" which includes bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Hypocrisy and Edge of Sanity among others. A band too influenced several modern Western Metalcore acts, such as The Black Dahlia Murder and Darkest Hour.

After At a Gates broke higher within 1996, drummer Adrian Erlandsson, bassist Jonas Björler and guitarist Anders Björler formed The Haunted while vocalist Tomas Lindberg bounced around between several groups including Skitsystem, Disfear, The Crown, Lock-Up, Nightrage and The Great Deceiver. Adrian Erlandsson left The Haunted to join UK goth metal outfit Cradle of Filth later on. There stand been rumor just about a link to of the band to activity, however these own been debunked by members of the band.
